Studying the Book of Hebrews

Back in fall 2020, I started a study on the book of Hebrews. Even growing up in the church, it’s not a book I knew a lot about. I can’t even say that I read through it other than my “read through the bible in a year” I did once or twice. I embarked on the journey not having a lot of information and feeling a little ashamed of how little I knew. I’m deep into it now and I wanted to share the resources that I’ve been using to learn more and more. The more I’ve read, the more questions I’ve had. This has taken me to more and more research. Compared to other books of the Bible, there aren’t a lot of resources available. There aren’t several devotionals going through Hebrews, there aren’t churches doing series after series on Hebrews, and there aren’t a lot of theologians who have worked through and published their work on Hebrews. I’ve had to dig for this information and I’d like to ease your search a little. Because I’ve loved reading and learning and growing in my knowledge and love for Jesus through the book of Hebrews. I can honestly say that it has changed me in different ways than I would have thought. There is a depth that wasn’t there before studying Hebrews and I want that depth for you too! So, if you’d like to join me in studying Hebrews, I’d recommend starting with these resources:

1. BETTER by Jen Wilkin. https://www.lifeway.com/en/product-family/better-bible-study I didn’t watch the videos but I did the workbook study. This was a great study to start with because I was wrestling with the text on my own, guided by her questions and references. There isn’t a lot of informational content without the video element, but I wasn’t doing it with a group. This was a study that gave me a thirst for more. I wanted more content and more information and more understanding.

2. My pastor, Pastor Rex, did a ten-part sermon series through the book of Hebrews and I found it helpful and informational. You can find the series on youtube at this link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5rg8KVNSjHubKOMtHMvNu5tD7Ij-TNON

3. HEBREWS A CALL TO COMMITMENT by William L. Lane https://www.christianbook.com/hebrews-a-call-to-commitment/william-lane/9781573832953/pd/832951

Description: “By surpassing most traditional commentaries, Lane’s work unveils Hebrews as a sermon rendered by a concerned “preacher” to his Roman church, which is under persecution and dangerously close to rejecting the faith. As an exposition of encouragement and exhortation, Hebrews addresses the central concerns of our contemporary church as well: the felt absence of God, a climate of uncertainty and insecurity, the tension between secular conformity and spiritual maturity and the treat of societal perversion and materialism to a Christian commitment. Christians are called upon to express a faith that is rooted in the future and to continue this life of pilgrimage with a radical new view of reality, which is based on sure confidence in the intervention of God in daily life. Tracing the writer’s development thought by thought, rather than verse by verse, careful attention is paid to the cultural and historical background. This work is useful as a study guide for groups and individuals, or for any reader who wishes a mature understanding of the book of Hebrews.”

4. EXALTING JESUS IN HEBREWS by R. Albert Mohler Jr. https://www.christianbook.com/exalting-jesus-in-hebrews-ebook/r-mohler/9781433608391/pd/90842EB?kw=21440761692&mt=b&dv=c&event=PPCSRC&p=1186432&gclid=Cj0KCQiAst2BBhDJARIsAGo2ldX_b0teIu1Lf4uHEGvy8N0OZYK_y-P3f2fWTcLlTobZbvPGVGAkkMQaAlsLEALw_wcB#CBD-PD-Description
